Valley Coronavirus Update: 7,648 cases, 320 deaths and an extended stay-at-home order

Happy headlines are hard to come by these days. Coronavirus cases in the Valley and fear concerning the pandemic continue to rise, but there are silver linings – the community is coming together (virtually) in solidarity and local organizations, businesses and residents are doing the best they can to support each other. Our duty during these tough times is to keep you informed and updated, even if the news isn’t always uplifting. Here is a roundup of coronavirus-related news in our region for Thursday, April 30.

Coronavirus Cases Exceed 7,600
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there are now 7,648 confirmed cases of coronavirus throughout the state. Maricopa County’s cases are now more than 3,900.

Death Toll Rises to 320
On Thursday, the health department announced that 320 Arizonans have died due to coronavirus. People 65 or older make up 244 of those deaths.

Governor Ducey Extends Stay-At-Home Order
In a press conference on Wednesday, Governor Doug Ducey announced that he would extend the state’s stay-at-home order from April 30 to May 15. He also stated that nonessential retailers can reopen on May 8 if they adhere to social distancing guidelines.

President Trump to Visit Arizona
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump revealed that he has plans to tour the Honeywell facility in Phoenix. According to a tweet from his assistant and press secretary, Judd Deere, the visit will “highlight critical medical equipment and the addition of 500 manufacturing jobs in the state.”

Arizona Schools to Open by Next Academic Year
According to Arizona Superintendent of Public Schools Kathy Hoffman, the state plans to reopen schools at the start of the next academic year. She hopes to announce a detailed plan by the end of May.
