Valley Coronavirus Update: 3,962 cases, 142 deaths and a campaign to support first responders

Happy headlines are hard to come by these days. Coronavirus cases in the Valley and fear concerning the pandemic continue to rise, but there are silver linings – the community is coming together (virtually) in solidarity and local organizations, businesses and residents are doing the best they can to support each other. Our duty during these tough times is to keep you informed and updated, even if the news isn’t always uplifting. Here is a roundup of coronavirus-related news in our region for Wednesday, April 15.

Coronavirus Cases Approach 4,000
According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there are now 3,962 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Arizona. There are more than 2,000 cases in Maricopa County alone.

Death Toll Rises to 142
On Wednesday, the health department reported that the total number of deaths due to coronavirus has risen to 142, 60 of which occurred in Maricopa County.

Nursing Homes Experience Increase in Coronavirus Cases and Deaths
Over the past week, long-term care facilities in Maricopa County have seen a spike in coronavirus cases. Nearly half of all coronavirus-related deaths in the county have occurred in nursing homes.

State Re-Evaluates Thousands of Unemployment Applications
Congress recently approved more lenient federal eligibility requirements on applications for unemployment and gave the green light for an additional $600 to the $240 weekly maximum in Arizona. Governor Doug Ducey also waived the one-week waiting period and requirement to apply for jobs for those seeking unemployment benefits.

Local Buildings to Be Lit Blue in Honor of Medical Workers
On Wednesday, Governor Ducey announced the “Light AZ Blue” campaign, which will cast a blue glow on buildings across Arizona as a symbol of support for first responders and essential health care employees working to combat the coronavirus outbreak. Participating structures include the state Capitol and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

State Partners with the University of Arizona to Provide Testing to Health Care Workers
Governor Ducey announced Wednesday that Arizona will partner with President Robbins and U of A to provide 250,000 antibody tests to health care professionals and first responders.

Governor Ducey Implements Plans to Restore Economy
The governor has been in close contact with small businesses to discuss best practices to “accelerate economic recovery when it’s safe and healthy to do so,” according to a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday.
