Legendary Phoenix Suns broadcaster Al McCoy believes the two most important things for play-by-play broadcasters are “preparation and concentration,” something he thinks about each game day, whether it be home or away. Well-known for catchphrases like “Shazam!” “Oh Brother!” and “Heartbreak Hotel!” the one-time Iowa farm boy is also the longest-tenured NBA broadcaster of all time, embarking on his 48th season with the Suns. Although what he keeps on his table is simple, each item is essential to following his prep-and-focus mantra – and to his record-breaking longevity.
