Sandahl Tremel is a wardrobe fixer. “I am the person behind the designer making sure that everything they want is there… [and] fits correctly,” says the costume shop manager at Arizona Theatre Company, which stages shows in Tucson and Phoenix. This month ATC brings to the Valley The Royale, a play inspired by the life of Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion. On any given day, Tremel might be renting costumes, buying shirts online or pulling suspenders from ATC’s stock “because belts were not used” in the play’s 1910 setting. Tremel let us peek into her costume kit.
