Through May 31, Practical Art is presenting a collaborative show titled “The Apple & the Tree,” featuring the work of eight artists and the work of their children. Some artists are collaborating on pieces with their children, while others are creating separate works in a variety of mediums, including photography, watercolor, screen prints and ceramics, according to Practical Art owner Lisa Olson.
The artists include Andrew Seiferth, Denise Yaghmourian, Gennaro Garcia, Kristin Bauer, Linda Pullinsi, Lori Fenn and Troy Moody. Their children range in age from 5 to 17. There will be an artists’ reception from 7-9 p.m. during First Friday festivities on May 6.
“All the artists are unbelievably talented, and they all have these unbelievably talented kids,” Olson says. “This is a really fun opportunity to try something different.”
On Friday, May 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dusty Boots Square Dance Social will host a square dance at Practical Art featuring music by Pick & Holler and calling by Grace Rolland. They’ll teach attendees how to do a variety of square dances, with each dance lasting from 5-15 minutes. There’s a suggested donation of $5-$8 per person, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting charity.
From 7-9 p.m. on the fourth Friday of every month (May 27 this month), Practical Art partners with a local 501(c)(3) for Charity Pie Night featuring pies by local baker Karen Olson of Vonceil’s Pies. For a $5 donation you can get a slice of pie, and a $10 donation will get you “as much pie as you’d like,” says Lisa Olson, sister of Karen. Past pies have included Mexican chocolate, banana peanut butter cream and jalapeño strawberry.
During May, all donations and 10 percent of all sales during the Charity Pie Night will be donated to New Way Academy, a school for children with learning difficulties and disabilities.
