Revered by many as the King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale pioneered the “surf music” genre in 1960s California. The style is characterized by reverb-heavy guitar, and in Dale’s case, influenced by Mexican and Middle Eastern sounds. Some of his biggest hits include “Miserlou” and “Surf Beat.” At 78, he’s still going strong, playing a packed tour schedule filled with the fast staccato picking that influenced artists like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
