Coronavirus Case Count Pass 58,000
With 3,591 new cases reported today by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona’s COVID-19 case count has risen to 58,179. This is a 48.8 percent increase in reported cases since last Tuesday, June 16. Maricopa County remains the county with the most reported cases of the state, at 33,883, or 58.2 percent of the total.
Death Toll Reaches 1,384
The ADHS reported 42 new deaths today, June 23, raising Arizona’s total count to 1,384. More than three-quarters of total deaths in Arizona are people aged 65 and older.
Governor Ducey on Masks
Governor Ducey said in a press conference last Wednesday, June 17, that there is now a trend in the wrong direction concerning positive COVID-19 cases. Following requests from local governments, he will now allow them to implement and enforce policies on face masks.
Avondale, Carefree, Chandler, Coconino County, Flagstaff, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Guadalupe, Litchfield Park, Maricopa County, Mesa, Phoenix, Pima County, Peoria, Santa Cruz County, Scottsdale, Surprise, Tempe, Tolleson, Tucson and Yuma County have all released rules requiring “face coverings or masks in certain circumstances,” as reported by The Arizona Republic. As the governor’s decision to delegate mandating face coverings to local governments came only last week, city and county requirements will be monitored for updates in the coming weeks.
Teens Raise Funds and Supplies for Navajo Nation
A Phoenix teen and her friends have raised more than $15,000 for supplies for the Navajo Nation, as told by a press release from Xavier College Preparatory. Junior Caroline Purtill, along with her friends, created a social media campaign to raise awareness and funds for COVID-19 aid, purchased supplies and delivered them to Window Rock. She said that this experience “showed [her] that we take what we have for granted,” and that they will be planning another trip to deliver supplies later this summer.
