Tourists often overlook resort gift shops, assuming they’re full of overpriced trinkets. Locals might never visit a resort to shop. Both approaches are flawed – especially in the case of this resort, where the gift shop is as carefully curated as the art that permeates the property. The boutique offers work by artists who live in Cattle Track, an art community across the street from the resort. Established in 1929, Cattle Track has been “maintaining the history of the community” for generations, says resident artist Mark McDowell, who helps curate the shop’s wares. When the resort was built six years ago, management asked artists asked to contribute pieces to the property and help with its “needs” – plates and menu illustrations for on-site Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen, and tables for the suites. And to stock the gift shop. “For the artists, it’s a nice bridge from the studio,” McDowell says. “For the guests that come here and see the works in their room… it’s a chance for them to take a memento of the property.”
