Every week, we present a curated list of live music in a wide range of genres around the Valley. This week’s column features a joyful bluesman, a Goblin King and a new way to experience a classic movie.
March 17
Yacht Rock Revue
Due in large part to last year’s Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary on HBO, the smooth sounds of this sun-kissed genre are making a comeback. However, the ensemble Yacht Rock Revue, which has been around since 2007, insists that the music has never left. It has had the honor of sharing the stage with many of the legends it emulates, including Kenny Loggins. 8 p.m., $27-$45. The Van Buren, 401 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix, 480-659-1641, livenation.com
March 18
Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: In Concert
It’s hard to tell what people love most about Jim Henson’s classic fantasy film: the Muppets or the music (courtesy of the legendary David Bowie). Find out if it’s the latter when a live band plays along to the songs and score while the movie plays on screen. 7:30 p.m., $39.50 – $119.50, Ikeda Theater at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St., Mesa, 480-644-6500, mesaartscenter.com
March 19
Pokey LaFarge
While many have labeled the output of Pokey LaFarge as blues or Americana, the singer-songwriter insists that his latest album, titled Rhumba Country, is its own thing, stating that it’s “much more exciting to create his own genre.” He has a point, as there isn’t anything bluesy about the joyful track “Sister André.” 7:30 p.m., $30-$45, Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd St., Phoenix, 602-716-2222, crescentphx.com
March 21-23
