Hike of the Week: Ranger Trail, South Mountain Park & Preserve in Phoenix

As one of the largest municipal parks in the nation, SOMO boasts an enviable menu of hiking trails.  The 1.5-mile Ranger Trail gets hikers to the top of one of the park’s three mountain ranges by way of a steep, edge-hugging path that connects with the 15-mile National Trail.

RATING: moderate

ELEVATION: 1,443 – 2,278 feet

BEST SEASON: October – April

GETTING THERE:

From downtown Phoenix, go south on Central Avenue to the main park gate. Continue one mile on the main park road (Steven Mather Drive) to the turn off for the Five Tables picnic area, turn left, go 0.1-mile and turn right into the trailhead parking area.
