RARE WATER

The Box Canyon of the Hassayampa River is one of just a few places where the 100-mile desert waterway flows partially above ground. Most of the time, the hike is a traipse through sandbars and rivulets, but heavy rain can make passage impossible.

Getting There: From the U.S. 60/93 traffic circle in Wickenburg, go 4.6 miles north on U.S. 93 to Scenic Loop Road at milepost 195. Turn right, drive 6.8 miles, take the right fork at a Bureau of Land Management “No Dumping” sign. Go 0.1 mile to the parking area. Scenic Loop is sedan-friendly graded dirt, however, some sections may wash out during heavy rain.
