Revenge is a major motif in literature. Readers often delight in seeing their favorite protagonists vindicated – but how do writers use the idea of revenge to propel their stories forward and motivate their characters? How can that be done in a socially responsible way?
Tempe-based writer Gionni Ponce will explore answers to these questions and more during a “Write Here, Write Now” workshop titled “Writing through Revenge” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 22. Ponce is a former 2020 Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers’ Conference Fellow currently working on a collection of short stories about bilingualism and multi-generational conflict in Mexican-American families.
In this workshop, Ponce will examine passages from The Round House by Louise Erdrich to inspire writers to create their own revenge plots and write a few short scenes. The workshop is part of the NEA Big Read: Phoenix, which celebrates Indigenous arts through more than 15 workshops, book clubs and lectures throughout March.
Tickets for the workshop cost $5 and can be purchased on Eventbrite via the event’s Facebook page.
