According to a 2019 Pew Research study, 20 percent of U.S. adults listen to audiobooks. “It’s the fastest growing form of book enjoyment today,” says Dave Pratt, owner of STAR Worldwide Networks, a Scottsdale-based media production company.

With over 40 years of experience hosting radio shows, TV shows and podcasts, Pratt – also known as “The Morning Mayor” – started his company in 2009 and started producing audiobooks shortly after that. According to Pratt, audiobooks are more accessible than traditional reading materials. He says that audiobooks can be enjoyed while working, traveling or even while accomplishing everyday tasks. “I’m a busy guy,” Pratt says. “I love to read, but I just don’t have time. So, if I can listen to audiobooks and get the same information, I’ll do it.”

As for the future of audiobooks, Pratt predicts that they will continue to grow in popularity, due to their accessibility and high level of entertainment. As June is Audiobook Appreciation Month, Pratt offers some insight into what makes audiobooks so enjoyable. A good audiobook, according to Pratt, has an engaging mix of sound effects, music, narration and overall production value – “almost like a Broadway play,” he says. “You can hear memories somewhat come to life,” he says. “When you can hear it – that’s the magic of an audiobook.”

STAR Worldwide Networks has produced several audiobooks, including SLED: The Serendipitous Life of Edward Diethrich, narrated by Dr. Ted Diethrich, founder of the Arizona Heart Institute, himself. The autobiography details the life of Dr. Diethrich and his career as a renowned heart surgeon. STAR Worldwide Networks is also currently producing an audiobook of Dave Pratt’s autobiography, Dave Pratt Behind the Mic… and Beyond. Proceeds from sales of Dave Pratt Behind the Mic: 30 Years in Radio, which was published in 2008, went to the American Cancer Society. Now, the audiobook is being released by chapter and is available for free on STAR Worldwide Networks’ website.
