Distance learning has now also become social distancing learning, as many of us who used to frequently enjoy attending university classes in auditoriums, mixology demos in packed bars and cozy educational salons in people’s homes are now attending mostly to the internet. Thankfully, cyberspace holds more knowledge for us, in the form of virtual classes.

Arizona Humane Society Virtual Classes and Kits
All in-person dog training classes at the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) have been canceled, but you can still teach your old dog new tricks (or your new puppy basic training) with virtual pet training classes on Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. Virtual classes and consultations cost $20 for 30 minutes and you can sign up online. And if you want to keep the kids busy, the AHS offers “Animal Ed-Ventures” kits that can be delivered to your home and contain hands-on crafts and virtual animal meet-and-greets.

Four Peaks’ Virtual Beer Academy
Cheers to beer education in the time of coronavirus. Thanks to Four Peaks’ Virtual Beer Academy, you can raise a glass with friends and get a booze-infused education without getting within 6 feet of anyone. The next class, “The Brewing Process,” takes place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. Join the free seminar via Zoom to learn all the steps in the brewing process, become familiar with the equipment and discover tweaks that can make beer even better.

Girls Rock! Phoenix Music Journalism Workshop
The annual Girls Rock! Phoenix band camp was canceled this year, but the local nonprofit wants to make sure there’s some sonic-related summer fun and education anyway. So, it’s offering an 8-week virtual workshop for aspiring music journalists, ages 13 to 17. Classes take place Wednesdays, June 17 through August 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. and will cover topics like how to write insightful music reviews and tips for conducting great interviews, as well as a look at the business side of journalism. Like the Girls Rock! Band camp, the workshop is offered on a sliding scale beginning at $0. Visit girlsrockphoenix.org.

Art House Online Workshops
There’s no shortage of fun virtual painting classes right now, but The Art House in Gilbert goes all out with their digital offerings. There are painting classes including watercolor courses, but there are also lessons on drawing, brush pen lettering, cutting and distressing denim, and even cookie decorating. Class fees vary but range from $15-$40. See a schedule of digital workshops at The Art House website.
