Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Med School/Year Graduated: University of Texas Southwestern, 2001
Years in Practice: 20

You studied psychobiology at Yale. How does your background there impact your work as a physiatrist?
Psychobiology merges mind and body – reflecting my mother’s background in psychology and my father’s in science. This foundation shapes my work as a physiatrist, where I strive to help patients regain movement, function and quality of life through holistic care.

You tout the benefits of yoga as a tool for pain management and have written about it in several medical journals. Why is it so beneficial?
My 30-year yoga practice inspires my research highlighting yoga’s role in managing back and neck pain. It improves flexibility, strengthens core muscles and enhances posture while fostering mindfulness and relaxation, helping patients reduce pain perception and improve overall well-being.

Are there any rehab exercises that even folks without injuries should do?
Strength training is the foundation of musculoskeletal health and injury prevention. I also emphasize core strengthening, flexibility and balance exercises to support health span. And remember, don’t be afraid to pick up some weights – they’re key to staying strong and healthy!

What are your interests and hobbies outside medicine?
Date nights with my husband, adventures with my boys, reading a book before sunrise, starting my mornings with exercise, cuddling my dog Rudy, sharing coffee or movies with friends, listening to live music and practicing piano bring me joy.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation/Pain Medicine
Med School/Year Graduated: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, 2000

You’ve made multiple Top Docs lists as both a physiatrist and pain specialist. How are the fields related?
Yes, they frequently overlap. Physiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat musculoskeletal and nervous system conditions, focusing on restoring function and quality of life. Many [of us also] specialize in pain management, given its close connection to these conditions.

You and Susan met in medical school and completed your residency together before starting your own private practice as husband and wife. What have been some of the most significant challenges and achievements along the way?
Working with my wife has been remarkably smooth, though she occasionally brings up work as I’m falling asleep! As for our achievements: Having trained 22 fellows and growing Desert Spine and Sports Physicians to six locations with 18 providers has allowed us to positively impact many more lives.

You and Susan are in terrific shape! How do you maintain such a high fitness level, as busy middle-age professionals?
We stay fit by exercising nearly every day, adapting our routine as we age to include a mix of aerobic, weight training and functional exercises. For nutrition, we rely on healthy prepared meals from Eat Clean Phx during our busy workweeks.

Sports Medicine

Family medicine, orthopedics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation all contribute to this growing medical field, which focuses on sports injuries and recovery.
