Anne Marie Zaki, M.D.

Opthalmology
Med School/Year Graduated: George Washington University, 2000
Years in Practice: 20

What is the single most common eye malady you diagnose and treat?
It’s a tie between cataracts and ocular surface disease – otherwise known as dry eye, which affects so many people here in the desert.

Conversely, what are some of the most rare?
I’m a cornea-trained subspecialist, so I see some very uncommon corneal dystrophies. I’ve also diagnosed some rare cancers of the eye and brain. The eye is such an incredible organ, it truly is the window to the body – and arguably the soul.

How has cataract surgery advanced in recent years?
It’s evolved in so many exciting ways with the aid of new techniques, lasers and exciting intra-ocular lens replacements. Our [modern] techniques are less invasive with faster healing. I can customize cataract surgery for each of my patients based on their eye health, activities and visual goals. We have lenses that are now adjustable after implantation to help our patients reach their best visual potential.

How do you help guide patients through the life changes that come with gradual vision loss due to diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration?
Treatments for glaucoma and macular degeneration have advanced significantly in this past decade, and thankfully, patients are maintaining more vision with these new therapies. However, these scenarios are never easy to navigate. It’s important to ensure my patients are safe and supported through these life changes with honest and straightforward conversations, education and using resources to help optimize what remaining vision they have.

Your clinic, Desert Eye Specialists, has been in operation for almost 50 years. Are there any families that have visited the office for generations?
Absolutely! Dr. Errol Sweet opened the doors in 1974 and we have seen and continue to see so many families over the generations.

What are your interests and hobbies outside medicine?
I love to spend time with my family as a busy mom of two very active teenagers. I’m involved in my church community as well. I love to travel, read [and] organize – and am a classically trained pianist.

What shows are you streaming these days?
Yellowstone, 1923 and 1881. I love period stories!

“If I wasn’t a doctor, I’d be…”
I’d be a travel blogger or art historian.
