Drag queen and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Joey Jay used to struggle with shaving and waxing. Now, he’s made the smooth move and is giving laser hair removal another chance!

Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race will remember the “Filler Queen” Joey Jay from Season 13. The Phoenix-based drag queen sat down and talked to Phoenix’s laser hair removal experts at Milan Laser Hair Removal about his former grapples with shaving, waxing, trimming, and a laser hair removal experience gone wrong. Read on to learn more about the benefits and why we’re saying, “Shantay, you stay” to laser hair removal!

What was your go-to method of hair removal before switching to laser hair removal?

Oh my goodness, have I tried a plethora of solutions. Depending on the body area, I would shave, pluck, wax, or use an electric trimmer. Using a razor on my underarms, chest, or bikini area would cause lots of razor burn, pimples, cuts, and discomfort. Waxing caused horrible ingrowns, so I started trimming close to the skin, resulting in a few nicks if I missed or went in at the wrong angle.

How would you compare your previous method with laser hair removal?

My previous method was always a dreaded weekly appointment with myself. It would result in cuts and irritation, only to have to do it all over again the following week. Laser hair removal has replaced these sessions from once a week to once every five weeks, reducing hair growth each time.

Have you struggled with ingrown hairs?

Wow! Who hasn’t? I’ve definitely struggled with ingrown hairs near my mouth where my beard or mustache grows and on my neck and chest especially. I avoid shaving my chest as much as possible for this specific reason. In the past, I tried waxing my chest, and the breakout of ingrown hairs was horrible. Never again!

How has laser hair removal improved your life and work as a drag queen?

Let me tell you, laser hair removal has been a complete game-changer. Many of the gorgeous queens I’ve worked with swear by it! Underneath all of the drag, I live my life as a man and have hair growing all over my body. I always covered my entire body just to avoid the ongoing maintenance of hair growth. It’s cut down on my getting-ready time. I no longer dread shaving my neck for fear of ingrowns, blemishes, and irritation. Laser hair removal makes back-to-back shows so much easier with no pain or discomfort. I used to schedule my shows with a day in between to avoid shaving, and now I can pretty much do shows as often as I’d like!

What made you choose to have your arms and Brazilian treated?

I have a lot of hair on my arms, and I got tired of trimming them before any occasion, in or out of drag. I was always a little self-conscious, especially if I had missed a spot. Let me tell you, the worst thing is when you’re about to go on stage, and you notice a patch of hair that you missed —- and there is no razor in your bag. I was always curious about Brazilians. I didn’t want to do the entire area —- just a few spots, because I like the aesthetic of hair in some areas. Maintaining these areas can be hard to reach. It can be time-consuming, and there are so many things I’d rather be doing than looking at my backside with a mirror playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Were you nervous about your Brazilian in particular?

Did it ease your mind knowing the providers are medical-trained professionals? I was a little nervous, like anyone I’m sure. Is this going to hurt? How long will it take? How long will the discomfort last? I learned that laser hair removal doesn’t take long at all, discomfort is minimal, and like they say, “Beauty is pain!” But even with my low pain tolerance, I can handle an entire session! Knowing the providers are all medically trained was reassuring. In the past, I had not-so-good experiences with laser hair removal that turned me off of the idea, like when a provider treated right over my tattoo. The healing took weeks, and my tattoo does not look the same, even missing some pieces.

How was your experience in the clinic and with your provider? How would you rate the service in terms of comfort and professionalism?

My experiences have always been incredibly quick, convenient, and easy! The team is always glowing whenever I walk in and is so friendly. I’m never in the building for more than 30 minutes for my treatments.

Did anything surprise you about the experience?

Two things that really surprised me were how fast the treatment appointments were and how much I thought it would hurt versus what it actually was!

What made you give laser hair removal a second chance?

I took a break from laser hair removal after my tattoo fiasco, but after getting all of my questions answered at Milan Laser and learning the entire staff is medically trained with a nursing or PA degree, I felt Milan was the place for me!

Do you have advice for anyone considering laser hair removal?

Stop waiting and go for it. You will wish you tried this sooner!
