Nice try, Pinehurst. You’re beautiful, Pebble Beach. We love you, Bandon Dunes. But only one location can claim the crown of Golf Town, USA, and we hereby declare that it is clearly Greater Phoenix. The evidence speaks for itself.

Local Talent

South Florida is a popular residential locale for PGA Tour pros, but Scottsdale has scads of them, too – including the top-ranked player in the world: Jon Rahm. He even went to ASU!

Tournaments

The PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup on the Champions Tour, and the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Championships (in 2022 and 2023) are all played in the Valley. The only bummer? The LPGA’s annual event split for the East Coast last year.

EQUIPMENT

Need new sticks? Check out the high-tech tools offered by equipment companies PXG and PING, both based in the Valley. GoDaddy tycoon Bob Parsons founded PXG in 2014.

Artists at Work

Even folks who design courses live here! Valley residents and their local work include Phoenix native Forrest Richardson (Short Course at Mountain Shadows); Bill Coore (Saguaro Course at We-Ko-Pa and Talking Stick with partner Ben Crenshaw); Scott Miller (The Westin Kierland Golf Club and Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa) and partners Tim Jackson and David Kahn (The Other Course and The Bad Little Nine at Scottsdale National Golf Club).

Games

Not quite ready for 18 holes yet? Then swing away for fun – perhaps with some adult beverages – at Topgolf locations in Scottsdale, Glendale and Gilbert.

Teachers

Want to play better? Get help from the six local instructors who are on GOLF Magazine’s 2020-2021 Top 100 Teachers in America list (four of whom have made the list for at least 20 consecutive years).

Talking Stick Golf Club pros Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott have made GOLF's Top Teachers list every year since 2001 and 1996, respectively.

Courses

With 220 layouts throughout the Valley, you can’t go wrong. There are stellar municipal courses (Papago); upscale daily-fee tracks (We-Ko-Pa and Troon North); memorable resort courses (The Boulders Resort & Spa Scottsdale, The Westin Kierland Golf Club and The Phoenician Golf Club); a PGA Tour venue (The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale); exclusive private clubs (Estancia, Scottsdale National, Whisper Rock, Desert Forest and Desert Mountain); and even an 18-hole par-3 course (The Short Course at Mountain Shadows).
