Inspired by the old apothecary shops of New Orleans, Grey Hen RX is one of three cocktail concepts at mixology mastermind Jason Asher’s Century Grand in Arcadia Lite. Suffice to say, if it’s holiday spirit you’re lacking, Grey Hen has the cure for what ails you. Consider The Gripe’s Egg, a fantastically festive concoction that brings both eggnog and banana bread to mind. It’s a take on the flip cocktail, which combines a spirit with sugar and a whole egg, all shaken together with ice. Butterscotch, burnt sugar and molasses notes of ghee-infused Plantation O.F.T.D. rum mingle with nutty, yeasty Oloroso Sherry and tropical banana liqueur to conjure cozy sensations of fireplace chats and Christmas cheer.

A mixture of saffron and egg was thought to be a cure for the plague. At this stage, it can’t hurt to try. Add 1 oz. Plantation O.F.T.D. rum, ½ oz. Yellowstone bourbon, ½ oz. Don Zoilo Oloroso Sherry, ½ oz. Giffard Banane du Brésil, 1 whole egg, 1 dash Bar Keep saffron bitters and 3 dashes Angostura bitters to a blender and blend with crushed ice. Serve in a large snifter, top with more crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint and freshly grated nutmeg*.

*The Grey Hen recipe differs slightly, including a ghee fat-washing process a bit too complex to describe here.
