“You may have peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and not even know it,” says Dr. Kevin Duwe, an interventional radiologist who uses image-guided technology to diagnose and treat PAD. “As people age, they think it’s normal for their legs to hurt when they walk or their feet to feel numb, but it’s not.” PAD is a circulation disorder that may be causing these symptoms.
“If there’s poor blood flow to your legs and feet, you’ll have pain, cramping or wounds that won’t heal,” explains Duwe. If you ignore these signs, it may lead to an amputation. “If you get an amputation, because you have PAD, your life expectancy is worse than if you had breast cancer or lymphoma. PAD is a serious problem.”
