Growing up, Starr Urbatsch believed her name was destined for movie marquees. “I thought I was going to be an actress,” the Phoenix native says. “Reality hit.” After working in the corporate world, she had an epiphany: “I love plants, I love being outside… I wanted to go back and get my degree in horticulture.” She landed at Desert Botanical Garden and is now the agave/aloe/non-cactus succulent collection manager. Her name may not light up the silver screen, but it is emblazoned on the tools she uses on her plant pastiche. Urbatsch let us take a gander at her garden kit to see what makes DBG’s roughly 50,000 plants grow.
