What is the most common prosthodontic procedure? Are any on the rise?
Complete dentures, dental implants, porcelain veneers and full-mouth rehabilitation are the most common prosthodontic procedures. The use of digital dentistry technology is [also] on the rise.

Are there any common prosthodontic misconceptions?
One of the common misconceptions is that people don’t realize that dentures are custom-designed based on features of their face, size, sex, smile, etc. Many of my patients think that denture patients all get the same teeth.

What got you interested in prosthodontics?
Prosthodontics is both an art and science, which provides patients with aesthetics and function. Personally, I love the aesthetic aspect of prosthodontics, and that’s why I selected prosthodontics as a specialty. After dental school, I spent three years in residency specializing in how to restore function and aesthetics, particularly with implant technology.

Can you also replace the jawbone?
Bone grafting techniques and materials have improved dramatically over the past few years. Typically, oral surgeons and periodontists provide these types of surgeries so the prosthodontist has the foundation they need to provide the best aesthetic and functional results. They are an important part of our team, and these procedures can often greatly improve the final outcome of the case.

As someone so focused on teaching upcoming generations of dentists, what specialties do incoming students seem most intrigued by?
I’ve seen an increase in the number of students who are interested in specializing in the field of prosthodontics, as they see the value in learning how to manage complex cases and achieve ideal aesthetic results. Students are increasingly interested in technology as well, and prosthodontics gives them the opportunity to use technology and digital dentistry on a daily basis.

You graduated from Cairo University in Egypt. Any good Egyptian food in the Valley?
Unfortunately, there isn’t any Egyptian food in the Valley, but there are lots of great Middle Eastern restaurants such as Persian Room, Al-Hana and Princess [Mediterranean Restaurant &] Market.

What’s the funniest thing a patient has said to you on nitrous oxide?
“Doc, you have the most beautiful eyes and smile I have ever seen.”

“If I wasnt a dentist, I’d be…”
An architect. I love building beautiful things: teeth, houses and gardens.
