In Survivors: Celebrating Life Beyond Domestic Violence (O’Tahirah Films, $39.95), Phoenix entrepreneur and activist Tahirah Ogletree flips the coffee-table-book norm on its head. Glossy glamour shots of domestic violence survivors are interspersed with harrowing accounts – and photos – of their abuse (trigger warnings galore). Ogletree is a domestic violence survivor and lost a sister to this societal scourge. Her mission to help others escape this fate informs every page, from her list of abuse warning signs to a “back-on-your-feet budgeting” worksheet to help victims financially detach from abusers. It’s a heavy, disjointed mix of elements, but it comes from such a real place of vulnerability and strength that you can’t help but be drawn in.
