The perfect holiday present doesn’t have to elude you. The Shemer Art Center in Arcadia boasts a gift shop offering hundreds of one-of-a-kind gifts at truly reasonable prices. Each piece is hand-made by famous and up-and-coming local artists.
The Shemer Art Center is hidden in plain sight on the southeast corner of East Camelback and Arcadia. Near the entrance, a Latin phrase inscribed over a cozy fireplace translates to, “Art is long, life is brief.” Built in 1919, this onetime home is the oldest in the Arcadia neighborhood. It has been a museum since 1985.
While you’re browsing, check out the schedule of classes and upcoming events. And don’t forget to check out the art in the museum itself.
New art shows emerge every few weeks; group and solo shows, instructor and student art (the latter emanating from the center’s own classes).
Catch the annual high school or college scholarship show, and begin to track a young artist’s career.
The remarkable grounds are home to the Shemer’s outdoor sculpture garden. Save even more time to stroll.
The Shemer hosts Family Fun Night on the third Thursday of the month. For $15, you and your family will leave with your own paintings (made with the aid of a local artist instructor).
The Shemer also has created an annual pet-themed art work event, dubbed the “Furry Friends Fine Art Festival.” To critique the art with a “Spot-on” point of view, the Shemer proudly hosted (wait for it) 100 dogs and 1 cat.
New art classes start in January 2017, and follow six or seven-week sessions. One-day workshops happen on Saturdays and occasionally during the week. Art history lectures occur the second Thursday of the month.
Shemer Artistic Director Tess Mosko-Scherer says Arizona has a more vibrant art scene than most people realize.
She describes the Shemer as a little museum with a big impact: “A great place to come and learn about art by doing it or through observing.”
Mosko-Scherer says it’s special to have a piece of art work created right here in Arizona.
