See the Light

Even if you’re not staying at Little America Hotel, stop by the property through January 31 to see its 500 acres of surrounding forests illuminated by more than 1 million lights. Enjoy a brisk evening stroll through the extensive grounds, then enjoy a hearty meal at the Western Gold Steakhouse or a nightcap at the Tiffany Tree Lounge, which also features wireless Internet and big-screen TVs, just in case you can’t break ties with technology.

Reach for the Stars

There’s something magical about a winter night replete with stars, and knowing more about the speckled sky can make for an extra special experience. Throughout December, Lowell Observatory hosts Holiday Skies, an evening presentation that discusses the mythology and science of the winter sky, including a discussion of the Star of Bethlehem. In the later part of the month, Holiday Star Fest invites guests to view the heavens through numerous telescopes set up on the Lowell campus. With tickets only $6 (for adults), this is one of the cheapest ways to enjoy a night out in Flagstaff.

Info: Holiday Skies, December 1, 7, 8, 14, 15 ,19, 21, 22; Holiday Star Fest, December 26-30; Lowell Observatory, 1400 W. Mars Hill Road, 928-233-3211, lowell.edu.

Have a Sappy New Year

OK, so it’s not Times Square, but Flagstaff’s annual Great Pine Cone Drop on New Year’s Eve is still a sight to behold. Thousands gather in Flagstaff’s Heritage Square for a festive block party, then huddle in front of the historic Weatherford Hotel to witness the 5-by-7-foot aluminum (read: sap-free) pinecone descend from the balcony, ringing in the New Year. For families with children who can’t quite make the midnight mark, the pinecone drops first at 10 p.m., then again at midnight for adults.

Info: New Year’s Eve Block Party, Heritage Square, 6 E. Aspen Ave., 8 p.m.-midnight, free. The Great Pine Cone Drop, December 31, Weatherford Hotel, 23 N. Leroux St., weatherford.com, 10 p.m. and midnight, free.
