Why did you want to become a doctor?
“I grew up in a family of physicians. I’m actually a fourth-generation physician. My father, uncle and grandfather all practiced here in Phoenix. There’s been a physician from my family practicing here since the early part of the 1900s. So, I had an idea that I might want to be a doctor growing up.”

If we asked your patients to describe their experiences with you, what would they say?
“I think they would say that I’m sincerely interested in them and that I try to listen to them and what they’re experiencing. I try to have them be part of the treatment process. On the talking therapy side, I want them to be comfortable to talk through what they need to. This kind of treatment works best if the doctor and the patient are working together – that we have an alliance. I certainly strive for that.”

What question do you get most often from patients?
“Early on a lot of patients are concerned if they’re going to get better. Most psychiatric illnesses do get better, so you try to give them a sense of hope. If they can try to be patient with the therapy, whether it’s a combination of talking therapy and medication, or just medication, it may take awhile, but the odds are they’ll get better and their illness will be manageable for the rest of their life.”

How do you plan to stay a Top Doc?
“I’ve been involved with teaching young doctors, whether they be medical students or residents, for 28 years. I’m fortunate because the training program really forces me to read all the current literature. That gives me the opportunity to be on top of the latest treatments.”

Where do you like to go in Phoenix for a little peace of mind?
“My home is a wonderful place to collect myself and be with my family. I enjoy going to a Suns game or just being outdoors. To me, a walk or a hike is a great time to clear your mind.”
