As the Valley continues to grow, so does its population. That’s why Phoenix Children’s Hospital is expanding its facilities to accommodate the anticipated 1.5 million children in the greater Phoenix area by 2030 – which would make Phoenix one of the largest pediatric markets in the entire nation.
Michael Teodori, a pediatric heart surgeon with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, says the expansion of the hospital is much needed when considering the Valley’s growth.
“The growth of the city is remarkable,” he says. “You look at the number of children in the community and it’s growing exponentially.”
The $450 million, multi-year expansion will add 214 beds to the Thomas Road location, build larger diagnostic, treatment and surgical facilities, a new outpatient building, an education and conference center, and a new main lobby by 2030.
An additional $23 million will renovate the neonatal intensive care unit at the Banner Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. This will multiply the facility by four times its current size – to 38,000 square feet – and will include 76 private patient rooms by January 2008.
“The expectation is that we can deliver healthcare as good as anywhere,” Teodori says. “The expectation with the expansion is partly nicer facilities, partly attracting newer ideas and people, and building centers of excellence that have more value to the community.”
