CHOOSING THE 2012 TOP DENTISTS

Every spring, PHOENIX magazine mails 1,600 surveys to randomly selected dentists throughout the Valley. The surveys ask the dentists to fill in the names of those dentists who, in their judgment, are the best in each of eight specialties. We ask dentists to nominate their fellow practitioners because we believe medical professionals are best qualified to judge medical professionals.

The dentists mail the surveys back to us, we tally the votes in each specialty and decide where to cut off each category based on the number of dentists who received a high number of votes.

PHOENIX magazine does not give any preference to dentists who advertise. Though there are cases when a dentist on the list also has an ad in the magazine, it is merely coincidence. The PHOENIX magazine sales staff doesn’t see the list until you see the list. With the exception of the five dentists profiled in the article, the dentists have no advance knowledge of whether they’ve made the list. We also do not give any preference to dentists based on their location within the Valley.

Once the names are selected, we obtain the dentists’ addresses and contact information from the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners. Next, PHOENIX magazine’s fact-checkers verify the dentists’ names, addresses, phone numbers and specialties. In addition, each name is checked against the state’s dental board to determine whether the dentist has been convicted of malpractice or has faced other disciplinary actions. Those that have are removed from the list.

Each year, we also do short feature profiles on a handful of dentists. These dentists are randomly chosen, though we do try to profile dentists from a variety of specialties.
