How did you feel about going to the dentist as a kid?
I have memories of watching what my dentist was doing in the reflections of his glasses, remembering the assistant telling me that I was going to feel really good and feel like I was floating in space as she put the nitrous oxide on my nose. I was an astronaut off to a new world. As an older child I was excited to have braces and would walk around with a piece of small red rope licorice over my teeth, pretending!
What’s the biggest misunderstanding about dentists?
That they enjoy hearing patients say “I don’t mean to be rude, but I hate the dentist.” Why would anyone say that to someone who may be placing sharp instruments in their mouth? As dental professionals, we have feelings, too!... Also, most of the public thinks that if there is no pain present in their mouth, everything is okay. In dentistry, that is far from the truth. There are many conditions that can be present for a period of time before they actually start to cause discomfort, from fractured teeth to silent abscess and periodontal disease.
Besides brushing and flossing, what should people do to keep their teeth healthy and looking great?
Water-picking is another option. I am always surprised at what still comes out after I have flossed first, then brushed for two minutes with my Sonic diamond clean… Glad that I am not going to bed with stuff still up under the gums. Drinking beverages that have a neutral pH like plain water with some cucumber slices in it or plain ice tea that is unsweetened. Damage to the enamel and tooth decay can develop in a low pH environment, because the bad bacteria really grow like crazy.
Proudest moment as a dentist:
Probably the first time that I did some veneers on this gentleman who had so much decay up at the gum line, he was so embarrassed that he would not show his teeth, even when he spoke. After his work was done and he returned for routine care, he was just a different person... Besides the eyes, I believe the smile is the first thing people look at; it is the window to your soul and the barometer of how healthy the rest of the body is.
