camelbackpedoortho.comWhere did you attend dental school?I attended dental school at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and completed my orthodontic residency at the University of Washington in Seattle.
How many years have you been in practice?I just went to my 10-year dental school reunion!
Did you like going to the dentist as a kid?I loved going to my orthodontist. I knew from the minute I left his office for the first time that I wanted to become an orthodontist. Actually, I still have an old homework assignment from sixth grade where the teacher asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, and it says “orthodontist.”
What’s your favorite toothache-inducing guilty pleasure treat?Peanut brittle from See’s Candies. Yum.
If someone is nervous before going to the dentist, they should:First, make sure to find a dentist that makes them comfortable. Every office has a different atmosphere, so look for one that works for you. Our office has a beach theme with movies playing on the walls and the ceilings for distraction. If you prefer, bring an iPod with your favorite music.
I wanted to become a dentist after…Visiting my orthodontist as a child for my first consultation. I love working in such a happy environment where we are able to help people look and feel their best. Many people first come to our office embarrassed and unwilling to smile.
“4 out of 5 dentists recommend chewing with Trident gum”: agree or disagree?I am fine with any gum – just as long as it is sugarless.
What kind of toothbrush do you use?I use both a manual toothbrush and a Sonicare, but I am definitely partial to my Sonicare.
Why do dentists always get a bad rap in movies, e.g., Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors?I think it stems from decades ago when dental offices were mainly used to treat emergencies when someone was in pain. Presently, the focus is on preventive care in order to avoid larger and more costly procedures. Our goal is to keep a healthy and intact dentition [proper tooth development] throughout life instead of just patching up problem teeth.
