Low-fat, high-flavor turkey burgers are worth the hunt.

When the mercury tips 110 degrees, a thick, coma-inducing burger might not be the best lunch idea. So how do you quell that gnawing burger craving? Simple: Order a turkey burger. Finding one that doesn’t taste like a cardboard puck isn’t easy, but bacon helps. So does starting with a free-range, hormone- and antibiotic-free bird. Hopdoddy’s Continental Club satisfies those prerequisites and more, adding basil pesto, sun-dried tomatoes and Parmesan, all mixed into the all-white meat. Topped with peppery arugula, applewood-smoked bacon and melted provolone on a soft, whole-wheat bun studded with oats and seeds, this is one fine burger to crow about. ($8.50)

If ordering a turkey burger is your chief concession to healthy eating, it’s hard to beat the version at Delux. There’s no sacrificing of flavor, thanks to a lean, grilled patty goosed up with minced red bell pepper, scallions, jalapeño, cilantro, garlic, olive oil and lemon juice. Throw in potassium-rich avocado, pico de gallo, fat-free cilantro aioli and a whole-wheat bun topped with cracked wheat, and it’s a fairly healthy lunch disguised as a burger – if you skip those famous skinny fries, that is. ($10.75)


Notorious Burgers

Named after Brooklyn crime boss Joe Bonanno, who voluntarily “retired” to Tucson in 1968, Bonanno’s Turkey Burger is big and bold. Eight ounces of free-range white meat from Mary’s Farm in California is seasoned with a pinch of smoked pepper and sea salt. Seared on a flattop for a flavorful crust, it stays juicy on the inside. Paired with sunflower sprouts, tangy feta, avocado and onions (grilled and hickory-smoked for a bit) on a toasted brioche bun, this munchable mobster deserves the utmost respect. ($11)
