Is there any new technology that you’re excited about in the field of general dentistry?
Technology has completely changed the way we practice dentistry. Same-day crowns, smile makeovers, implant restorations – all can be done much quicker and with more predictability, saving patients time and money.

Do you have any favorite areas of dental care? If you’d chosen a specialization, which would you have chosen?
I really enjoy helping people replace missing teeth with dental implants. I enjoy general and cosmetic dentistry, as I have the opportunity to help people with all aspects of dentistry. I think I would have enjoyed specializing in oral surgery.

What do you tell patients who ask if it’s really necessary to have their teeth cleaned every six months?
I tell them [it] will help them keep their teeth longer, as our hygienist can get to places above and below their teeth that they cannot access with just a toothbrush and floss. It also gives us a chance to do an oral exam to look for cavities and abscesses, but more importantly, any signs of oral cancer.

What made you choose Arizona after getting your degree in Ohio?
I had grown up all my life in Utah, which I loved and still do, but I was ready for a change in climate. I love the sunshine and do not miss shoveling snow during the winter. Arizona offers so much for me to do outdoors, and if I want to get a snow fix in I can head up to the mountains, which we have here.

Your children have interesting names – Hadley, Cohen and Cortland. Where did you get the inspiration?
When we were first married, my wife had written down two names in a day-planner – Hadley and Cortland – and told me those were the two names she wanted if and when we had children. We tried for 12 years to have children with no luck. After much thought, we decided to adopt and were blessed with boy-girl twins. However, at the time, I was [fond of] a TV series and the family’s last name on the show was Cohen. So she picked Hadley for our daughter and I picked Cohen for our son. Then, miraculously, four years later we were blessed to have a son, and it was obvious that Cortland would be his name.

What do you do in your spare time?
I’m an avid water-skier. I love going to the lake and being on the boat with my family and friends. I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids traveling and just being around them. I’m also a huge Ohio State Buckeye [fan] and love to watch them play football. I spend at least three hours every Saturday in the fall watching the Buckeyes.

“If I wasn’t a dentist, I’d be...”
A sports anchor/sports reporter. I’d love to be on the sidelines of college football reporting during games.
