On your Aletris Center website, it says naturopaths are primary care physicians (PCPs) in Arizona. How do you fuse natural forms of medicine into routine physical care such as well-woman screenings and annual physicals?
That’s a great question. Natural forms of medicine come in at the level of my treatment plan for a patient. I believe that performing a skilled physical examination (as in a well-woman or annual physical) is the basis of all good medicine, whether that medicine is conventional or naturopathic.
You have an extensive teaching background in a wide range of physiological subjects including biology and anatomy. Why is teaching so important to you?
Teaching is a way for me to deeply learn a subject and has been incredibly enriching for my medical practice. I found that, year after year, as I retaught anatomy and physiology, I would make new connections between each of the organ systems within the body. This has helped me tremendously in my management of highly complex cases.
Explain natural hormone replacement therapy and its benefits.
Natural, or bio-identical hormone therapy is the prescribing of hormones in the same form that our glands produce within our bodies. The concept is that the body will recognize these forms and respond better than to hormones that have been manipulated away from their natural form and made into drugs.
What naturopathic methods do you use in maintaining your own health? Any easy tips or quick advice for people who want to pursue the naturopathic route?
I juice organic green vegetables, exercise, practice yoga, meditate, rest and play. [But] easy tips and quick advice are the antithesis of naturopathic medicine. So much of our modern way of life is disease-promoting. Naturopathic medicine is about rebuilding a true foundation of health.
What are your favorite healthy-eating haunts around the Valley?
Most days you’ll find me making food in my own kitchen. When I venture out, I like Flower Child, True Food [Kitchen] and Grabbagreen.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love boating on the lakes in Arizona with my sweetheart. I also enjoy ballroom dancing, reading and traveling.
