In addition to debuting her original single “Ugly” and other material from her new EP, scheduled to be released later this year, Ryniewicz will perform at a benefit concert at Matt's Saloon in Prescott on August 25. Proceeds from the concert will benefit skip1.org, a nonprofit that encourages people to “skip one” personal luxury – a drive-thru cheeseburger, an afternoon latte, an impulse buy in line at the grocery store – and instead donate the money that would be spent on said luxury to provide food and water for children in need.
The sentiment ties in with the message of “Ugly,” an anti-bullying ode aimed at empowering children from all walks of life to embrace and celebrate their differences. “I named the song Ugly because growing up I dealt with terrible bullying and was called ugly by a lot of people,” Ryniewicz says. “I wanted to write a song that changed the definition of ugly to help people realize that ugly is just an impression, and not a truth.”
