Super Chunk Sweets & Treats

“We struggled for two years to pick just the right name and kept coming back to Super Chunk,” says Sergio Velador, a restaurant veteran of 18 years. He’s referring to Super Chunk Sweets & Treats, the small-batch confections company he owns with his wife, superstar Cowboy Ciao pastry chef Country Velador. Sure, the name sounds like a Goonies-star-turned-superhero, but the sweets are irrefutably tasty and chunky. “The name just stuck,” Country says.

Maybe it’s all that caramel. Super Chunk started with one caramel corn flavor – Chocolate Bacon – but has since added Cioccolato Pretzel-Roma with milk chocolate and hazelnuts, Brown Butter Fleur de Sel, and potato-chip-encrusted Junk Food ($8 for 8 ounces). Country makes the potato chips from scratch, mixing the salty, crisp spuds with popped corn, roasted peanuts and frosted flakes before tossing it with handmade caramel.

Though caramel corn is Super Chunk’s bread and butter, the Veladors also make unusual cookies (mesquite chocolate chip shortbread) and candies (duck fat toffee, honeycomb and sponge candies). Find Super Chunk Sweets & Treats at Cowboy Ciao, the Bodega, Urban Table, the Farm at South Mountain, and Pane Bianco.
