Preservative-free peanut butter will spread a smile across your face
A trip to Uruguay during college to construct housing for the poor stuck with Jeff Malkoon, a third-generation Phoenician and ASU alum. When he started Peanut Butter Americano a couple years ago, he decided to give back to the non-governmental organization that organized the trip, A Roof For My Country. Proceeds from the sale of his dark chocolate-flavored peanut butter go directly to support poverty reduction programs in the Americas. Worthy cause aside, here’s another reason to buy his line of peanut and almond butters: They taste good and are free of preservatives and stabilizers. The classic peanut and almond butters let the nuts shine, but the flavored butters inspire creativity in the kitchen, including a cinnamon honey peanut butter. Smear it on artisanal bread (Noble, perhaps?) and top with thinly sliced green apple. The newest addition, cinnamon roasted almond butter, makes a mean – and nutritious – smoothie combined with yogurt. Order online, at select farmers’ markets or find at Phoenix Public Market, Luci’s Healthy Marketplace, Whole Foods and more. Check the website for a complete list. ($6-$7 for 8 oz. or $10-$12 for 16 oz.)
