photo by Brian GoddardEverything about Kettle Heroes was designed with purpose. In 2013, brothers Rudi and Aaron Sinykin felt something was missing from their professional lives as Subway franchise owners. They were looking for a different kind of success, so they sold their stores and started a for-profit popcorn business with a significant charitable slant.

Kettle Heroes, Arizona’s only certified kosher popcorn business, gives a chunk of its proceeds to several local charities, with The Pat Tillman Foundation at the top of the list. “We wanted to make Arizona a better place for our kids, so we’re leading by example,” Rudi Sinykin says.

It’s hard to miss the sky blue food trucks – sporting caped crusaders dancing in a field of popcorn – parked at various farmers’ markets and festivals around the Valley. Just as much thought goes into the product itself. The popcorn is popped in a nut-free and gluten-free facility and comes in two styles: kettle corn (popped in oil with sugar and salt) or savory popcorn. Both are offered in several unique flavors, including cayenne lime kettle corn, Hatch green chile cheddar popcorn and smoky chipotle cheddar. Find the artisanal popcorn at various farmers’ markets, Duck and Decanter and select AJ’s Fine Foods. Or buy it online with custom labeling options for wedding favors and corporate gifts. Pricing varies by size and flavor; expect to pay $6 for a large bag (9 ounces).
