Felicia DayFew people have made a career out of being awkward and deliciously geeky the way actress-vlogger (that’s short for “video blogger,” n00bs) Felicia Day has. Once a shy, home-schooled nerd who wrote poems about “Ultima 7” and spent two hours a day immersed in “World of Warcraft,” the adult Day turned her everyday life into fodder for her Kickstarter-funded web series The Guild and the Geek & Sundry YouTube Channel.

The flame-haired actress has a cult following among pop culture enthusiasts and Whedonites who watched her tackle vampires as potential hunter Vi on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, virtually travel to Titan on SyFy’s Eureka and team up with demon-hunting bad boys Sam and Dean Winchester on Supernatural. Like fellow geek ambassadors Wil Wheaton and Jessica Chobot, Day’s small-screen persona isn’t an act.
In her online series “The Flog,” Day learns real-life skills worthy of a Dungeons & Dragons heroine, from archery and blacksmithing to trapeze – something the acrophobic actress isn’t likely to try again anytime soon. She’s also outspoken in the video-gaming community and was doxxed (i.e. had her personal information outed online) by haters during last year’s Gamergate scandal after publishing a Tumblr blog on the subject. “Don’t let other people drive you away from gaming,” Day said. “Games are beautiful, they are creative, they are worlds to immerse yourself in. They are art. And they are worth fighting for, even if the atmosphere is ugly right now.”

Day will make an appearance at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 17, to promote her new memoir, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). The book chronicles Day’s rise from ostracized calculus nerd and college valedictorian to Internet goddess, despite having been typecast early on as a “crazy cat lady” by Hollywood producers.
