1. Firestorm Film Festival – May 2
Arizona Christian University Communication majors will show an original screenplay during this third annual festival. This is a chance to financially support their talents as well as celebrate their achievements as each student has written and directed their own short film. 2. Paul van Dyk at The Pressroom – May 5
One of Germany’s most successful musicians, well-known electronic DJ and Grammy-nominated artist, Paul van Dyk, is making his way to the desert this week. He’ll be joined by Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Heartbeat. $35 and up. 8 p.m. The Pressroom, 441 W. Madison St., Phoenix, insomniac.com/pvdphoenix.

Downtown Mesa Association3. Free Comic Book Day – May 6
Don’t worry if you forgot your wallet at home because Gotham City in Mesa and other participating comic book stores are giving away 10,000 free comic books. Cosplay as your favorite character because there will be a costume contest in front of Gotham at 2 p.m. There will also be live music, meet and greets with local and national comic artists and a Super Scavenger Hunt. 4. FOODstock at Peoria Sports Complex – May 6
Over 60 local food trucks will be available to satisfy all kinds of food cravings from Boba tea to burgers. There will be a full bar, a DJ and $2-$4 samplings from every truck so you don’t have to settle on just one. Ticket proceeds will go toward a non-profit to feed the hungry. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo (on Siete de Mayo) by going to this 24th annual street festival, located across the street from CityScape. WAR, Brenton Wood and Tierra will provide live music throughout the day. There will be interactive rides and games for kids, traditional food and drink and Lucha libre. $5. 12-10 p.m. 200 W.
