It’s a recipe that seems as obvious as PB & J: downtown Scottsdale + walking + eating. Yet before Annie Breheny started “A Taste of Old Town Scottsdale” tours last fall, there were no regular walking tours of the area.
The former 944 magazine employee wanted to branch out on her own and remembered enjoying a food tour she went on in Chicago. So she combined her entrepreneurial spirit with her love of restaurants to launch Arizona Food Tours. She debuted with the Old Town Scottsdale tour and hopes to expand to other cities around the Valley.
“The restaurants were really receptive,” Breheny says of the startup. “I think the bad economy almost helped me because restaurants really want to get people in there.”
Currently, tours begin at the Scottsdale Historical Museum, stopping at Rusty Spur for South of the Border Burger sliders; Su Vino Winery to sample two wines and learn the art of tasting; Frank and Lupe’s for chicken-stuffed sopapilla served Christmas style (with red and green chile sauce); Cowboy Ciao for pig ‘n’ puddin’ – barbecued pulled pork over creamy polenta; and Sugar Bowl for a Top Hat, a cream puff stuffed with vanilla ice cream and doused with hot fudge.
Between courses, Breheny serves up a hefty dose of Scottsdale history and anecdotes sure to inform both locals and their in-town guests. It’s a recipe for “everybody’s happy.”
