From Boris Karloff’s clunky neck bolts to Peter Boyle’s catchy show tunes, Frankenstein has survived a multitude of incarnations – even live broadcast. Directed by Danny Boyle, the auteur behind
127 Hours and
Slumdog Millionaire, this seething adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic was staged at London’s National Theatre and broadcast live to venues worldwide (including Phoenix Art Museum) in 2011. Starring British actors Benedict Cumberbatch
(Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller
(Trainspotting), who alternated between the roles of monster and scientist, the play returns to Phoenix Art Museum for two screenings. On June 13 at 7 p.m., watch Miller be reanimated in Dr. Frankenstein’s lab, and on June 24 at 2 p.m., Cumberbatch plays the monster. The Phoenix Art Museum is the Valley’s only venue showing the play, which is not available on DVD. The screenings are free on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more info, visit
