Tucked away on the south side of Tempe, there’s a pocket of houses and shops called The Landings. The hub is McClintock Drive and Guadalupe Road, where a group of locally owned businesses have supported each other and their loyal customers for years. Shoppers and business owners say the area got its name because it has become a one-stop-independent-shop for food, gifts and everyday essentials.
So if you want an eclectic adventure, here are a few cool places to check out.
The neighborhood newcomer, Hoodlums, is scheduled to relocate in September from Arizona State University’s Memorial Union. Known for its wide (and sometimes weird) selection of new/used CDs and DVDs, Hoodlums also offers plenty of music miscellanea to feed your inner rock star. Next door is Changing Hands Bookstore. A fixture in the community since 1974, the business gives customers a place to buy new and used books as well as funky gifts and cards. The store features workshops, local professionals and prize-winning authors. After a full day of shopping, stop by Miele’s Italian Bistro for authentic Italian food. You’ll probably see the boss, Giuseppe Miele, who moved here from Naples and opened shop a little more than three years ago. He recommends favorites such as Shrimp Fradiavolo, Eggplant Rollatina and, of course, Guiseppe’s Chicken. If Italian’s not what your stomach is grumbling for, try Efes Turkish Cuisine. In addition to hosting parties, belly dancing and live music, it serves an assortment of authentic beverages and dishes from Turkey and the Middle East. Impress your date (or please your mom) with a trip to the Flower Shoppe. Also a neighborhood veteran, the shop’s been selling fresh flowers for 30 years. Workers say every day is an occasion, and they boast having the best Rio Roses in town.
