This club holds dances at the VFW every Sunday night, with beginner lessons at 5 p.m. and intermediate lessons at 6 p.m. Once you’ve mastered the steps to West Coast swing, test your skills during the social dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., which typically attracts around 200 people. Lessons run $7 for non-members and $4 for members. (A one-year membership costs $35). “It’s a very non-threatening environment, and we have people from their 20s up into their 80s,” says Dick Taylor, 64, a member for 10 years.

Master the sexiest dance around – the tango – from Ravi and Satya Khalsa, who call themselves the only “Master Teachers” in North America. The couple has two options for those tempted by the tango: Saturday group classes at Cannedy Performing Arts Center (6222 N. Seventh St., Phoenix), with beginning lessons at 6 p.m. and intermediate lessons at

7 p.m. ($10 per dancer); or lessons on the third Wednesday of every month at The Trunk Space (1506 W. Grand Ave., Phoenix) from 7 p.m. to

9 p.m. ($5 per dancer).

Club Red Swing

The Lindy Hop is the dance du jour here, but people from all over the Valley flock to this happenin’ club for the Charleston, Balboa, Shag, soul, blues and West Coast swing. With a full bar and menu, a 1,200-square-foot floating dance floor, a 62-inch flat screen and plenty of pumped-up music, Red Swing is more club than classroom. A mere $5 covers the 7:30-8:30 p.m. dance lesson plus the dancing afterward. Classes are taught by national swing champion Josh Leitz and Janet Tolifson, the first woman to teach the Lindy Hop in Arizona.

Hit these clubs, then check out the Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club’s 27th-annual Fourth of July convention July 2-6 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, where more than 1,000 dancers from across the country will come for lessons, dances and contests.
