With Yin and Yang Fridays, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is serving up a dual set of after-hours events designed to ease you into the weekend.
Yin Fridays, the more soothing of the pair, offer yoga and refreshments while Yang Fridays, the groovier of the pair, offer jazz music and wine tasting. Each provides a chance for professionals who aren’t able to view the galleries during normal hours or attend SMoCA nights to take in the museum’s displays.
“It’s a casual environment to learn more about the exhibits,” says Alex Parker, director of development. “It’s also a way to relax at the end of the week without being in a nightclub setting.”
The next Yin Friday is set for March 14 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. To integrate with an exhibit of photographer Lyle Ashton Harris’ self-reflective images, a yet-to-be-announced celebrity yogi or yogini will guide participants through a session bent toward creating inner peace.
Cassandra Coblentz, the exhibit curator, will then speak about Harris’ portraits and images of crowds, which deal with the many complexities of humanity, such as racial divides and tolerance.
Scottsdale’s Mandala Tea Room, which boasts a large selection of organic teas and vegan cuisine, will provide beverages and other fare to nibble on.
“After yoga and art on Friday evening, you can start the weekend refreshed,” Parker says.
At the first Yin Friday in January, a yogi and yogini “aligned” attendees’ bodies and minds before the participants viewed the Car Culture exhibit.
Expect art, a three-piece jazz band, wine, appetizers and perhaps a piece (or two) of organic chocolate at the next Yang Friday, which is set for May 30 from
7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Advance reservations are suggested.
