Arizona-borne podcasts are popping in the Valley of the Sun.
About a decade ago, podcasts were the domain of niche enthusiasts and nerds, merely a lesser-known feature in the iTunes store to the average consumer. Today, it seems everyone’s mom has her own podcast. Digital audio storytelling has seen a boom in listeners thanks to smartphones, long commutes and the explosion of more and higher-quality content. If you’re looking to listen locally, check out these Arizona-based podcasts.
Crime in Sports
You no longer need to listen to separate crime, sports and comedy podcasts because Crime in Sports covers all three. Phoenix comedians James Pietragallo and Jimmie Whisman discuss every sports-related crime and/or criminal you can think of, from O.J. Simpson to former NHL player Rudy Poeschek. The podcast is pretty lengthy – most episodes run around two hours – so it makes for great road-trip listening. You can listen to Crime in Sports on Spotify, Podbean and iTunes.
Small Town Murder
Brought to you by the same team behind Crime in Sports, Small Town Murder is exactly what it sounds like: a discussion of unspeakable crimes committed in small towns, but with a heavy dose of dark humor. The details of the crimes can be grisly, but thanks to the jokes, this podcast won’t give you nightmares (hopefully). Small Town Murder is also available on Spotify, Podbean and iTunes.
Sunny in PHX: The Suns Podcast
Dribbling its way into your ears and play-by-play analyzing everything you missed from the last Phoenix Suns game is the Sunny in PHX podcast. Arizona residents Charlie Erling, David McGraw and Mitch Krmpotich started the podcast about a year ago and update listeners weekly. Tune in for your sports fix on theunderdogsports.com and iTunes.
Chatterpod blossomed from a simple open-mic storytelling event called The Chatterbox at Fair Trade Café in Downtown Phoenix into a live-recording podcast. Thanks to Phoenix podcast production company Hoot ’n’ Waddle, The Chatterbox open-mic performers can decide if they want their performances featured on Chatterpod. Themed storytelling nights are held at the café every Wednesday, and participants must sign up by 7:30 p.m. in order to share their six- to eight-minute stories on the podcast. You can listen to performances on Soundcloud or hootnwaddle.com/chatterpod.php.
Finding Arizona Podcast
Host Jose Acevedo, a local landscape designer, and photographer Brittany Johnson joined forces to bring awareness to local businesses and nonprofits across the state. The weekly podcast has featured everything from flea markets to music festivals to a food donation delivery service. The podcasts run about an hour long and are available on findingarizonapodcast.com, iTunes and SoundCloud.
