Design doyenne Julia Buckingham brings her Modernique style to Uptown Plaza.
When Chicago-based interior designer Julia Buckingham set about to turn her design book Modernique into a brick-and-mortar shop, she knew her second home in Phoenix was the perfect place for it. She opened her flagship store in the same shopping center she visited with her grandparents in the 1960s, Uptown Plaza.
“Opening Modernique, the goal was to bring the book to life,” Buckingham says. “I have this showroom in Chicago and this office in Chicago, I’ve had antique stores before in Cincinnati, and I really wanted to have this compilation of my design under one roof. I want to be able to embrace the whole community of Phoenix and our design family.”
Modernique opened in November 2017 and offers antique and contemporary art and home furnishings – carpets, lighting, textiles and accessories – for those with a kooky, eclectic, and globe- and decade-spanning style. The collection is inspired by Buckingham’s travels and focuses on color and unique pieces such as a French gilded silver-leafed chair that has been reupholstered in “the most stunning Pierre Frey fabric,” Buckingham says. In her world, there are “no rules about design,” just a feeling when you know something is right for your home.
