Wren House Brewing Co.

Kölsch

Oh, sweet honey malt! Wren House’s Kölsch is crisp and clean, like a bite of sunshine followed by a shot of subtle fruit. It’s a little bit cloudy, like our judgment after a few pints. 4.8% ABV.

Historic Brewing Company

Undercover Cucumber

Cucumbers aren’t just for tossed salads and puffy eyelids anymore. When contemplating the numerous uses of a cucumber, the fresh folks at Flagstaff-based Historic Brewing Company saw a vision of a summertime lager that was “just as refreshing as a day at the spa.” This golden, effervescent brew also exudes flavors of basil and orange peel, but it’s the cucumber that really hits the palate, lingering on the back of the tongue for a long, gently malty finish. And at a mere 26 IBU (International Bitterness Units), it’s a crisp and cool cucumber indeed. 5.2% ABV.

Fate Brewing Co.
Oh My Gatos! Golden Ale

The lightest and least bitter (23 IBU) of our summer beer picks, Oh My Gatos! is an American-style cream ale brewed with American-grown corn. It has a deliciously smooth, silky mouthfeel. 4.5% ABV.

O.H.S.O. Eatery & nanoBrewery
Popsicle Blonde

This golden, clear beer tastes just like something you’d pick up at a lemonade stand on the side of the road… to heaven. Bright, tangy raspberry tangos with zesty lemon in a dangerously drinkable dance. 4.5% ABV.

The Phoenix Ale Brewery

Orange Peel IPA

This West Coast-style IPA is very hop-forward, but it’s a dry hop. The taste of the orange peel – added at the end of the boil – is so subtle you can barely taste it, but provides a slightly citrusy finish. 6.4% ABV.

SanTan Brewing Company

LimeLeaf American Summer Ale

From kale to keg, it seems like everybody’s putting produce in the mash tun. Last year, Chandler-based SanTan Brewing Company captured the citrus spirit of summer with its grapefruit shandy, and before that, its popular Mr. Pineapple wheat beer. This year, San Tan added the lovely LimeLeaf American Summer Ale to its all-star lineup. This traditional cream ale is brewed with kaffir lime leaves and fermented at a colder temperature than typical ales, which results in an herbal aroma, juicy flavor and smooth finish. 4.9% ABV.

SanTan Brewing Company

Shandy Arizona Grapefruit Ale

Dangerous because it tastes more like grapefruit juice than beer, this “Arizona Grapefruit Ale” has an unapologetically big flavor, so citrusy it’s a mystery how SanTan did it. The brewers at SanTan are like wizards, making magic with fruit. It tastes like there’s a whole orchard in one can. Originally introduced as a spring beer, this shandy is seriously so stunningly good that it should stick around for summer, and beyond, just like Mr. Pineapple. 4.7% ABV.
