McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Fitness CenterLet’s face it, summer can put a crimp in your fitness routine. If you’re a runner or a cyclist, hitting the pavement can be a grueling proposition. Ditto for hiking and walking. You can always jump in the pool, but not many of us have Olympic-size swimming pools where we can swim a decent lap. If you don’t belong to a health club or other fitness facility, lap swimming can be a challenge. Here are a few public pools around town where you can cool off while practicing your strokes.

City of Chandler
480-782-2733, chandleraz.gov
The City of Chandler offers year-round lap swimming in two of its six heated pools. Early Bird Swim is available at Hamilton Aquatic Center (3838 S. Arizona Ave.) from 5:30-7:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday; or you can get wet at the Night Owl Swim at Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center (5901 S. Hillcrest Dr.) from 7-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Prices for both are the same: $2 each swim or if you’re a Chandler resident, you can buy a pass starting at $7.50 for five visits going up to $200 for an annual lap swim pass.

Scottsdale residents and non-residents can swim laps at three of its four public swimming pools: Cactus Aquatics and Fitness Center (7202 E. Cactus Road, 480-312-7655); Eldorado Aquatics and Fitness Center (2301 N. Miller Road, 480-312-2484); and McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatics Center (15525 N Thompson Peak Pkwy., 480-312-6677). Until October, rates per visit are $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents or you can buy a 30-visit pass: $48 for residents and $72 for nonresidents. Rates increase from November through February due to increased utility costs.
