Lace Up Your Kicks for These Upcoming Charity Races

Since you’re out there, why not raise much-needed funds for Valley organizations? Even if you’re not a regular exerciser, there are plenty of options for everyone, from a short walk to a two-hour spinning session. Here are the top five events you can participate in during the next two weeks to benefit area charities.

12th Annual Pat’s Run
When: 7 a.m. Saturday, April 23
Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Arizona State University Campus, on the corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Packard Drive
Cost: $50 adults: $5 children 12 and younger (for .42 mile walk)

The Pat Tillman Foundation holds Pat’s Run in late April to commemorate the day Tillman died in Afghanistan while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment. The 4.2-mile run/walk (symbolizing Tillman’s #42 ASU Sun Devil jersey) takes place on the streets of Tempe ending at Sun Devil Stadium. Organizers expect more than 30,000 participants this year. The money raised goes to support academic scholarships.

7th Annual Arbor Day 5K Run/Walk and Arizona 811 Fun Run
When: 4:30 p.m. event expo; 6 p.m. fun run; 6:30 p.m. 5K run/walk Friday, April 29
Where: Tempe Kiwanis Park, 6111 S. All America Way, Tempe
Cost: $20; $25 day of the event

Lace up your racing shoes and run to benefit Trees for Tempe, a program that replaces community trees damaged or lost due to storms.

Televerde’s Paws for a Cause 5K
When: 7 a.m. registration; 8 a.m. 5K, Saturday, April 30
Where: Tempe Kiwanis Park, 6111 S. All America Way, Tempe
Cost: $35; $20 youth rate ages 12 and under

This inaugural race will benefit Home Fur Good, a nonprofit no-kill shelter. Bring your own dog or walk with a shelter dog with the hope that someone might adopt the pup during the event. There will be music, vendors, a 50/50 raffle and bake sale.

TGen’s 6th Annual Cycle for the Cure
When: Sunday, May 1
Where: 3 p.m. at Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club, 4444 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix; 8 a.m. at Gainey Village Health Club & Spa, 7477 E. Doubletree Ranch Rd., Scottsdale; 10 a.m. at DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa, 18501 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy., Scottsdale; 8 a.m. at Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa, 4200 S. Alma School Rd., Chandler; and noon at Studio 360, 3627 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix.
Cost: $200 tax-deductible donation

This two-hour indoor cycling event raises money for TGen cancer research. Set up a personal fundraising page, get donations and then cycle with other participants at different locations across the Valley. Two locations will also offer hot yoga as an alternative to cycling. Organizers have a goal of raising $200,000.

Steps for Vets 10K/5K/1 mile
When: 7 a.m. Saturday, May 7
Where: Arizona Falls at Indian School and 56th Street
Cost: $20-$50 depending on race

The inaugural Steps for Vets race will raise awareness and funds to support the successful transition of military veterans and their families to civilian life by helping them with housing, counseling, career development and comprehensive support. It’s a fast, flat course that the whole family can enjoy. Strollers and leashed pets are welcomed.
