Fencing at Camelback Village Health Club & Spa

Fancy a bit of friendly swordplay? Our 2014 fitness story on fencing proved prophetic among the Valley's left-of-center sporting enthusiasts: The sport is hotter than ever.

At Camelback Village Health Club & Spa, veteran fencing champion and coach Jim Barbour heads the fencing club, which he founded in 2001. Through five decades of fencing professionally and then coaching the fencing team at Arizona State University, Barbour has shepherded multiple fencers to the U.S.A. Fencing National Championships. Now, he teaches group and private lessons for épée plebes as well as pros and touts the benefits of the sport on coordination and reflexes and the development of leg and core strength. At the Village, he's taught everyone from children to septuagenarians.
